Intrusive Signals #3

The third issue of my latest zine project is assembled and at the printers now.

All being well, the release date is pencilled in for the next Bandcamp Friday which is 4th March.

Plus I have some stickers on order too....

It's the biggest zine I have made to date - 52 pages long.  It shall be reproduced on 100% recycled paper.

Featuring:

  • Chlorine - Instruments, sound art and electronics from the North of England.
  • Himukalt - desire, lust, hostility, rage, mania, depression, blood, flesh. Nevada, USA.
  • Brachliegen Tapes - Taking a broad brush approach to experimental sound from Kent, UK.
  • COLDSORE - Finnish dark drones and bespoke instruments.
  • Scum Alice - Dark improvised streaming from Indiana, USA.
  • Shaun Robert - Unused computer glitch art from the Institute For Alien Research in the 1990s.
  • Lucidet - Texan drone/noise and provider of some unique maze art.
  • Tyrannic Horizon  - My story of the Bristolian noise experimenter.
  • Jean Toms - Neurographical art from Devon, UK.
  • Split releases - I waffle on about why split releases are great.
Each issue will come with a bandcamp download code for Burial Practices by Booticker, courtesy of Brachliegen Tapes, and a code for Palimpsest [Live Documents] by Soloman Tump

In addition, the first 30 issues will come with a bandcamp download code for Pollutants VI by COLDSORE.

Final cost TBC but I will keep it as reasonable as I can.

Pre-orders will appear HERE via my limited run page

But also HERE on Bandcamp Friday if you wish to get free music bundled with the zine and also help me from incurring fees!

Wonder Valley Experimental 14

I discovered the festival called Wonder Valley Experimental which has been running for the past 14 years in California (Palms Restaurant, to be exact).

The organiser Phog Masheeen has kept it going through the pandemic in a virtual setting, and this year both the virtual and physical festivals are taking place.  Here's a little clippy video to get you excited!

I real shame I cannot get to the physical place - would love to perform somewhere like that! It looks a great venue.  My damp shed shall have to suffice for now.  Here is the poster for the physical in person (meat space) festival:

Here is the full virtual lineup:

I applied for a slot to the virtual festival and by golly I was accepted.  I have recorded a dull video using my recent "Palimpsest" setup (me stood in the corner of my shed twiddling things) and enlisted the talents of Arachnopus to edit some glory into the footage.

You can check out one of her other videos here for Dollarstore Keyboard and she seems to be some sort of wizzo at doing this.  I supplied some raw footage of Dartmoor and the surrounding area - am exciting to see what she comes up with!

Oh and I pretty much finished Intrusive Signals issue 3, more on that next....

The Tump Clump Episode 10

Welcome to Tump Clump Episode 10!

I enjoyed putting this show together - for some reason more so than usual.  Listening back to the recording, I do sound quite relaxed.  Hmm, strange.  A lovely selection of dimsal music for your ears.

I hope you enjoy listening.

Please support the artists.

00:00 Metgumbnerbone - Cailleach Bheur [Anthropological Field Recordings for the Dispossessed, Old Europa Cafe]

06:40 Pact Infernal - Circle 3 [The Circle, Horo]

10:30 Allegory Chapel Ltd - Come Forth [Harsh Noise Movement Compilation]*

*Hmm..doesn't appear to be on bandcamp anymore.  Not sure where you will find it?

16:35 Beth Gripps - Your Stolen Land will Boil Beneath Your Feet [Heal The People, Heal The Land, Vital Things]

22:00 Chafik Chennouf and Kasunori Sawa - False Paradigm [Fragments of Reference EP, The Stone Tapes]*

* I falsely referenced this track as not being from The Stone Tapes release - my bad! It is the opening track of the EP.  Check out the full release HERE. And it is also a collaborative release alongside the artist Kasunori Sawa, so again my apologies for not referencing them on the recording.

25:58 Alberich & Lussuria - Anti Renaissance [Borgia, Hospital Recordings]

32:10 Convulsive Action - Sick, Twisted [Pulverising Image, Strange Rules]

36:19 Stone Jaw - Ourselves in Relation to God [Amphibian LP]

42:35 Dregs of Zen - In Beat-Ween The Days [Dregs of Zen, Weird Garden Recordings]*

*Thanks to TQ Zine 50 for getting the code for this album to me, excellent stuff.  Everything I have heard on Weird Garden is indeed fab so check out the label....

47:52 Mutant Beatnikz - MaCKeral Sky, Mad Piglets and Panda Bear [Bandcamp?]*

*I just discovered this is in fact 3 separate tracks from the 2008 album Animal Farm

54:01 Plague Arish - Cascata (Waterfall) - EXCLUSIVE!

Palimpsest EP

I have been cogitating over this EP for about 6 months.

There were 4 complete iterations that were scrapped before I decided upon the tracks that eventually made the cut.  Hampered by my own disbelief and self doubt.... crippled by my own frailties.  Possibly 9 hours worth of material were recorded in total - and some of it may see the light of day in the future elsewhere - who knows...

In a previous post I said this should appear at some point this year... well, 2 weeks later, here it is....

Palimpsest EP

1. Clapper Bridge 06m23s

2. Longhouses 03m55s

3. The Maiden Sea 04m19s

4. Bearacleave 04m10s

5. Grimspound 02m49s

A palimpsest is something reused or altered but still bearing visible traces of its earlier form.

These sounds are inspired by the landscapes and lore of Dartmoor, UK.

Original artwork by www.dansmonsters.co.uk

I knew that I wanted to record some sounds that reflected my new home of Devon (specifically Dartmoor), and after some background reading on local folklore and various trips out into the wilderness... I returned to my shed with a clutch of photographs, field recordings and found detritus.

But I found distilling the wonder and magick of Dartmoor down to a maximum 22 minute EP extremely challenging.  We are talking about 368 square miles of national park with thousands of years of history and countless legends.... the enormity of the task I had taken on soon hit me like a ton of bricks.

Many tons of bricks (Rippon Tor rifle range)

So I feel this EP is the first chapter in my discovery of Dartmoor - an opening into its world.  Maybe there will be more precise excursions into it in the future.  This collection of sounds is typically chaotic in the "Tump" style - loose rhythms, noisy textures and an overall low fidelity feel.  But this time I think perhaps maybe a little bit more refined than previous Tump EP's... I would be interested to know what you think?

I made a small batch of these 3" CDr's (and amazingly only have 3 left - so snap them up quick if you want one) - and I love how the labels came out.  "ST" print stamp courtesy of Mrs. Tump.
